The Government has instituted a sweeping set of changes to the Canadian independent film and TV sector. The latest, and most drastic is to abolish the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) and the Canadian New Media Fund (CNMF). In their place the government will create the Canada Media Fund (CMF), which will be controlled by the Canadian cable industry. The new fund has no commitments to sustained documentary financing, allocates funds to broadcaster in-house production and eliminates guaranteed funds for public and educational broadcasting. As a result, independent Canadian documentaries will face a drastic decline in available funding.
At a time when Canadian documentaries are being celebrated at HotDocs, the continent's most successful documentary film festival, the makers of these films fear that their most critical source of funding will disappear due to changes proposed by the federal government.
Some of Canada’s top documentary filmmakers are coming together to hold a press conference on Monday, May 4th at 10:30 am at Emanuel College, Room 108, University of Toronto (150 Charles St W) to bring attention to this issue. We hope you will join us there.
